A significant amount of ALA’s annual budget depends on annual donations from members and supporters. The American Latvian Association is a charitable, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible. Names of all donors giving $250 or more are published in Latvian Dimensions.
If you have any questions, please contact Kristīne Ģiga, ALA’s Director of Fundraising at 651-707-3644 or by email. We can also help you find an attorney to discuss any legal concerns you might have.
We thank you in advance for your generous support.

Monetary donations – one time or recurring monthly
Donations may be mailed to ALA or made electronically by clicking on the link/box below.
Please consider a monthly recurring gift, which can be made electronically. This is a convenient option as it allows your donation of any amount to be deducted automatically each month from the credit or debit card of your choice. You can increase, decrease or stop your donation at any time. Donors receive an electronic receipt for each monthly donation.
Recurring donations are crucial to providing an ongoing base of community support that we can rely on, so you can continue to rely on ALA.
Matching donations
Many companies offer programs that match charitable contributions from their employees at rates as high as 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1. To find out if your company has a matching gift program, contact your employers’ human resources or benefits department.
Appreciated stock, securities
If you own real estate, securities, company stocks or bonds that have increased in value, you can avoid paying the capital gains tax by donating the security to ALA. When the security is being donated to a charitable organization, the total amount will still be eligible for a tax deduction. Contact the ALA office for details and account information needed to complete the transaction.
Retirement plan options
Making a gift of a qualified retirement plan asset such as a 401(K), 403(b), IRA or pension plan is another way to benefit ALA and receive significant tax savings. Retirement plan assets are often subject to extremely high estate taxes, and the income is fully taxable when received by an individual beneficiary. By naming ALA as the beneficiary of a retirement plan, the donor maintains complete control over the assets during his/her lifetime, but at the donor’s death the plan passes to ALA free of both estate and income taxes.
Memorial and tribute gifts
One of the most meaningful ways to memorialize a loved one or pay tribute to a special person is by making a gift in his/her name to ALA. Memorial Gifts can be designated for a specific program. Please contact the ALA office if we may be of assistance.
Starting with January 1, 2021, a one-time 5% administrative overhead fee will be drawn from every donation with a restricted purpose when it is received by ALA. This re-allocation of 5% of restricted donation income will be used to cover administrative overhead expenses necessary for administration of all donations (to include, but not limited to, salaries, rent, office supplies). The administrative overhead fee assessed by ALA does not prevent the donor from receiving a tax deduction on the entire amount of the donation. The administrative overhead fee applies to every donation with a restricted purpose, e.g. ALA Cultural Fund, Support and Aid to Latvia (SAL), Educational Trip Fund, etc.
