Ceļvedis Eiropas Parlamenta vēlēšanās!

ALA sadarbībā ar PBLA aicināja Paulu Raudsepu, vienu no Latvijas vadošajiem žurnālistiem, uzrakstīt nelielu pārskatu par EP kandidātiem un partijām. Šajā pārskatā īsi iepazīstināsim balsotājus ar Eiropas Parlamenta (EP) nozīmi, svarīgākajiem politiskajiem jautājumiem šajās vēlēšanās, un ar sešpadsmit sarakstiem, kuri sacenšas par Latvijas deviņiem deputātu mandātiem. Latvijā vēlēšanas notiks sestdien, 8. jūnijā, un tā būs jau piektā reize kopš iestāšanās Eiropas Savienībā (ES), kad Latvija sūta savus pārstāvjus uz vienu no trim galvenajām ES lēmējinstitūcijām. Ārzemēs dzīvojošie Latvijas pilsoņi arī ir aicināti piedalīties šajās vēlēšanās! Kā jau ziņots pagājušā mēneša ALA Infogrammā, ASV ir apstiprināti 4 iecirkņi – Ņujorkā, Čikāgā, Vašingtonā, DC un Losandželosā. Pilnu pārskatu variet izlasīt šeit.

ALA valde sabrauc uz sēdi Čikāgā

No 26. līdz 28. aprīlim ALA valde noturēja savu pavasara klātienes sēdi Čikāgā, latviešu centrā “Ligzda”. Sēdes laikā tika pārrunāti dažādi jautājumi, tostarp finanšu pārskati, kultūras pasākumu plānošana un izglītības un sporta programmas. Tika arī uzklausīti Pētera Blumberga (PBLA), kā arī Latvijas vēstnieka Māra Selgas ziņojumi – organizācijas ar kurām apvienībai ir cieša sadarbība. Priecājamies arī, ka Gaŗezera priekšsēdis Jānis Kukainis dalījās ar Gaŗezera nākotnes stratēģiskās plānošanas darbību. Liela uzmanība tika pievērsta arī 73. kongresa plānošanai, kurš notiks no 10. līdz 13. oktobrim Portlandē, Oregonas štatā. Papildus administratīvajiem jautājumiem, valdes sēdē tika apspriesti arī sabiedriski nozīmīgi jautājumi, piemēram, ALA loma Amerikas latviešu sabiedrībā un veidi, kā ALA varētu atbalstīt savas biedru organizācijas, biedrus un vispār ASV dzīvojošus latviešus. Izsakām lielu paldies Krišjāņa Barona latviešu skolas saimei par viesmīlību un gardajām brokastīm un pusdienām! Priecājamies arī, ka varējām piedalīties Čikāgas tautas deju kopas “Dzelmieši” labdarības pasākumā.

ALA 73. kongress Portlandē, Oregonas štatā

Ir sākusies istabu rezervācijas ALA 73. kongresam, kurš notiks no 10. līdz 13. oktobrim Portlandē, Oregonā! Tālāka informācija sekos. Kongresā ir gaidīti visi – gan biedru organizāciju pārstāvji (delegāti), gan citi ALA biedri. Rezervācijas kongresa viesnīcā - Hyatt Regency Portland - 375 NE Holladay St, Portland, OR 97232.

ALA muzeja direktores Renātes Grāveres nozīmīgais ieguldījums latviešu tautas stāstā

4. maijā, atzīmējot Baltā galdauta svētkus, ALA muzeja direktore Renāte Grāvere uzņēma viesus, tostarp Sarah Rogers - Heritage Montgomery vadītāju, muzejā un rīkoja īpašu pasākumu.

Pēteris Dajevskis par pasākumu raksta: “Pats notikums bija spēcīgs un emocionāls. Tas pataisīja Baltijas ceļu un barikāžu stāstus tik reljefus it kā tie vakar būtu bijuši notikuši. Šis "acu liecinieku piegājiens" pataisa vēsturi ļoti dzīvu un parāda mums tās nozīmīgumu - it sevišķi šodien ar Ukrainas karu. Tas ir tieši ko modernā muzeju interpretācijā cenšās panākt. Un to Renāte tik izcili izdara. Viņa ar savu mazo docentu komandu visu to paveic vissaugstākā līmenī. Viņa to visu panāk dabīgi, bet arī pāzīst savu vēsturi un var kodolīgi par to stastīt.” Tāpat Pēteris arī augstu izsakās par muzeju un tā nozīmīgumu: “Renātes ievada vārdi un katra runa bija fantastiska mutvārdu liecība, kas atvēra citu dimensiju par latviešu neatkarības notikumiem. Patiešam muzejs kalpo šodien kā "heritage centrs" (Heritage Center), kurš kalpo ne tikai kā vēstures atstāstījums, bet arī kā vitāls mūsdienu un laikmeta sarunu veicinātājs, kas dod mums kontekstu un cerību”.

Pasākuma laikā ALA ģenerālsekretāre Marisa Gudrā paziņoja, ka ALA valde ir formāli apstiprinājusi Renāti par muzeja direktori. Par to Renāte raksta: “Tāpat kā nekad nebiju gaidījusi ALAs Atzinības rakstu Valstssvētkos, tā šoreiz tas nāca kā zibens trieciens. Tas gandrīz vai izsita mani no sliedēm par tālāko programmā. Paldies visai valdei par šo uzticību, ko nemaz nedomāju, ka esmu jau pelnījusi. Ceru, ka nākotnē šī uzticība man nebūs bijusi veltīga.” Esam ļoti pateicīgi par Renātes dedzīgo un talantīgo darbu, kas patiešām ir nozīmīgs ieguldījums mūsu tautas vēsturiskajā stāstā!

Noslēgušās gadskārtējās Rumaka lasīšanas sacensības – ziņo ALA Izglītības nozare

Ik gadus ALA Izglītības nozare rīko grāmatu lasīšanas sacensības, kas dibinātas grāmatnieka Leona Rumaka piemiņā. Skolēnu uzdevums ir lasīt "visu un visur", tādā veidā iepazīstoties ar latviešu grāmatu un periodikas dažādību, un piedzīvojot to, ka lasīšana latviski var kļūt par daļu no viņu ikdienas. Šogad sacensībās piedalījās skolēni un pieaugušie no 6 skolām - Čikāgas, Losandželosas, Mineapoles, Ņudžersijas, Ņujorkas un Ziemeļkalifornijas. Dalībnieku skaits bija apaļš 100, katrs dalībnieks saņems atzinības rakstu no Izglītības nozares. Ja klases piedalījās vairumā un pildīja konkursa prasības, tās saņems naudas balvu no Rumaka fonda. ALA Kultūras nozare maija sākumā rīkoja filmas "Astra" izrādi

ALA Kultūras nozare, atzīmējot Latvijas neatkarības atjaunošanas dienu 4. maijā, piedāvāja Amerikas latviešiem baudīt filmu “Astra”, biogrāfisks stāsts par ievērojamo Latvijas nacionālās pretestības kustības dalībnieku Gunāru Astru. Viņa frāze no tiesas sēdes “Pēdējā vārda”: “Es ticu, ka šis laiks izgaisīs kā ļauns murgs”, kļuva par vadmotīvu un spēka avotu Atmodas laika cīnītājiem.

Filmu tika rādīta četros latviešu centros no 4. - 12. maijam: Bostonā, Ņujorkā, Filadelfijā un Rokvillē. Pasākumos piedalījās filmas režisore Liene Laviņa un scenārija autors - žurnālists un bijušais LTV Ziņu dienesta vadītājs Gundars Rēders. 19. maijā, pulkstens 14:00 (ET) tika piedāvāts virtuāls filmas seanss. Pēc filmas, pasākuma dalībniekiem bija iespēja piedalīties diskusijās ar Lieni Laviņu un Gundaru Rēderi.

Alise Paļule - ar sapni kļūt par 3D grafisko dizaineri

Labdarība Latvijā aktīvi atbalsta programmu “Spārno talantus”, kur tiek izvirzīts jaunieši no biedrības “Eņģeļa sirds” redzeslokā nonākušiem talantīgiem jauniešiem no maznodrošinātām ģimenēm Latvijā. Šīs ģimenes nespēj apmaksāt papildu izglītojošas nodarbības vai nometnes, kurās viņu atvase varētu izkopt un atīstīt kādu īpašu talantu.

Alise Paļule ir talantīga un mērķtiecīga 8. klases skolniece Īslīces pamatskolā. Mācībās meitene gūst augstas sekmes, kā arī ir Īslīces pamatskolas skolēnu pašpārvaldes vadītāja. Paralēli skolai viņa mācās Bauskas Mūzikas un mākslas skolas klavieru klasē, kā arī dzied mūzikas skolas korī. Apņēmīgā Alise ir uzaugusi piecu bērnu ģimenē lauku mājās. Viņas tētis ir pensionārs un mamma - mājsaimniece. Visi bērni ir ļoti talantīgi un darbojas dažādās nozarēs. Alisei padodas daudz dažādas nodarbes, piemēram, šogad piedalījās angļu valodas publiskās runas konkursā, kur ieguva labus rezultātus. Brīvajā laikā meitene daudz zīmē. Alise visvairāk sapņo kļūt tieši par 3D grafisko dizaineri, kas ir radoša profesija ar lielu potenciālu nākotnē. Viņa ir ļoti apņēmīga sasniegt savu sapni, un lai to varētu paveikt viņai ir nepieciešams atbalsts. Alise ļoti vēlas apmeklēt Dizaina un tehnoloģiju nodarbību kursu “3D dizains” Starptautiskajā Inovāciju skolā, kur jau šobrīd varētu paplašināt savas zināšanas un prasmes viņai interesējošajā nozarē.

Skolotāja sapnis pirmsstundas vakarā

Jau vairāk nekā divus ar pusi gadus interneta ārēs atrodams diasporas skolotāja sapnis vakarā, kad jāgatavojas nākamās dienas latviešu valodas, literatūras, folkloras, kultūras, ģeogrāfijas vai vēstures stundai latviešu skolā! ALA sekretāre organizē Baltiešu dienu Oregonā

18. maijā ASV baltieši Portlandes, Oregonas apkārtnē svinēja Baltijas dienu ar dziesmu un deju priekšnesumiem, garšigiem ēdieniem, un katras kopienas pārstāvju īsām uzrunām. Ikgadējo pasākumu trešo gadu līdzorganizēja ALA sekretāre Ieva Dekstere ar vietējām igauņu un lietuviešu grupām, un noturēja Oregonas Latviešu biedrībā. No latviešu puses, portlandiešu folkloras kopa nospēlēja dziesmas ar koklēm. ALA sabiedrisko attiecību vadītājs Dzintars Dzilna uzrunāja sanākušos, aicinot dalībniekus izmantot savu varu kā ASV vēlētājiem, lai palīdzētu aizsargāt mūsu kolektīvās intereses Baltijā. Maskava palielina savu agresiju ne tikai Ukrainā, bet arī pret Baltiju, citiem NATO sabiedrotajiem un partneriem, kā arī ASV, ar kiberuzbrukumiem, infrastruktūras sabotāžu, gaisa telpas militāriem pārkāpumiem un pēdējā laikā - GPS sistēmu traucēšanu komerciālajos lidojumos. Ir ļoti svarīgi, ka ASV Kongress pieņem likumprojektus kas nodrošina turpmāku ASV palīdzību Baltijas valstīm, lai attīstītu savu aizsardzību un atturētu agresiju no Krievijas, turpina piedāvāt spēcīgu ASV atbalstu Ukrainai, lai pilnībā sakautu Krieviju, un nosargā spēcīgu ASV vadību spēcīgajā NATO.

Guide to European Parliament Elections

ALA, in colaboration with WFFL/PBLA, invited Pauls Raudseps, one of Latvia's leading journalists, to write a short review about EP candidates and parties. In this review, we will briefly introduce voters to the importance of the European Parliament (EP), the most important political issues in these elections, and the sixteen lists competing for Latvia's nine parliamentary mandates. Elections in Latvia will be held on Saturday, June 8, and it will be the fifth time since joining the European Union (EU) that Latvia sends its representatives to one of the three main decision-making institutions of the EU. Latvian citizens living abroad are also invited to participate in these elections! As reported in last month's ALA Infogram, 4 locations have been confirmed in the US - New York, Chicago, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. You can read the full report in Latvian here.

ALA Board Meets in Chicago

From April 26 to 28, the ALA board held its spring meeting in Chicago, at the Latvian center "Ligzda". Various issues were discussed during the meeting, including financial reports, planning of cultural events and educational and sports programs. The reports of Pēteris Blumbergs (PBLA) and Latvian Ambassador Māris Selga were also heard - organizations with which the association has close cooperation. We are also glad that Gaŗezer's chairman, Jānis Kukainis, shared the activities of Gaŗezer's future strategic planning. Much attention was also paid to the planning of the 73rd Congress, which will be held from October 10 to 13 in Portland, Oregon. In addition to administrative issues, socially important issues were also discussed at the board meeting, such as ALA's role in American Latvian society and ways in which ALA could support its member organizations, members and Latvians living in the US in general. We would like to thank the family of Krišjānis Barons Latvian School for the hospitality and the delicious breakfast and lunch! We are also glad that we were able to participate in the charity event of the Chicago folk dance troupe "Dzelmieši".

Director of the ALA Museum, Renāte Grāvere, Contributes to the Story of the Latvian People

On May 4th, in celebration of the Restoration of Latvian Independence, ALA Museum Director Renāte Grāvere welcomed guests, including Sarah Rogers - Head of Heritage Montgomery, to the museum and held a special event.

Pēteris Dajevskis writes about the event: "The event itself was powerful and emotional. It made the stories of Baltic roads and barricades as vivid as if they had happened yesterday. This "walk of eyewitnesses" makes history very alive and shows us its importance - especially today with the war in Ukraine. This is exactly what the modern interpretation of museums strives to achieve. And that's what Renate does so brilliantly. She and her small team of docents do it all at the highest level. She achieves all this naturally, but she also knows her history and can tell it concisely." Similarly, Pēteris speaks highly of the museum and its importance: "Renāte's opening words and every speech were a fantastic oral testimony, which opened up another dimension about the events of Latvian independence. Indeed, the museum serves today as a "heritage center", which serves not only as a retelling of history, but also as a vital promoter of modern and contemporary conversations, which gives us context and hope".

During the event, ALA Executive Director Marisa Gudrā announced that the ALA Board has formally approved Renata as the Director of the Museum. Renāte writes about it: "Just as I had never expected the ALA Certificate of Appreciation on Latvian Independence Day, this time it also came like a lightning strike. It almost derailed me for the rest of the program. Thank you to the entire board for their trust, which I do not think I deserve. I hope that this trust in me will not have been in vain in the future." We are very grateful for Renate's passionate and talented work, which is truly an important contribution to the historical story of our nation and heritage!

Annual Reading Competition Comes to a Close

Every year, the ALA Education Office organizes a book reading competition founded in memory of the book writer Leon Rumaks. The students' task is to read "everything and everywhere", thus getting to know the variety of Latvian books and periodicals, and experiencing the fact that reading in Latvian can become a part of their everyday life. This year, students and adults from 6 schools - Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New Jersey, New York and Northern California - participated in the competition. The number of participants was around 100 and each participant will receive a letter of appreciation from the Education Office. If the classes participated in the majority and fulfilled the competition requirements, they will receive a cash prize from the Rumaks Foundation. Congratulations to the diligent readers!

ALA Office of Cultural Affairs Offers Virtual "Astra" Film Viewing

The ALA Cultural Affairs Office, celebrating the Restoration of Latvian Independence Day on May 4, offered Latvians in the U.S. the opportunity to enjoy the film "Astra", a biographical story about the prominent member of the Latvian national resistance movement, Gunārs Astra. His phrase from the "Last Word" trial: "I believe this time will fade like a bad nightmare" became a guiding principle and source of strength for the fighters of the Awakening. The film was shown in person in four Latvian centers from May 4 to 12: Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Rockville. The film's director Liene Laviņa and the author of the script - journalist and former head of LTV News Service Gundars Rēders took part in the events. A virtual screening of the film was offered by ALA on May 19 at 2:00 PM (ET). After the film, the participants of the event had the opportunity to participate in discussions with Liene Laviņa and Gundars Rēders.

Alise Paļule Dreams of Becoming a 3D Graphic Designer

The Office of Support and Aid to Latvia actively supports the program "Spārno talantus”, where one of the talented young people from low-income families in Latvia who have come to the attention of the association "Enģeļa sirds" is nominated. These families are unable to pay for additional educational classes or camps where their offspring could cultivate and develop a special talent.

Alise Paļule is a talented and dedicated 8th grade student at Īslīce elementary school. The girl achieves high results in studies and is also the leader of the student self-government of Īslīce elementary school. In parallel with school, she studies in the piano class of the Bauska School of Music and Art and sings in the choir of the music school. Alise is from a family of five children in a rural home. Her father is retired and her mother is a housewife. All the children are very talented and participate in various activities. This year Alise participated in the English public speaking competition, where she received positive results. In her free time, she likes to draw. Alice dreams most of all to become a 3D graphic designer, which is a creative profession with great potential in the future. She is very determined to achieve her dream. Alise would to attend the Design and Technology course "3D Design" at the International Innovation School, where she could expand her knowledge and skills in the industry that interests her.

A Teacher's Dream for the Evening before Class

For more than two and a half years, the diaspora teacher's dream can be found on the Internet - for the evening, when you have to prepare for the next day's Latvian language, literature, folklore, culture, geography or history lesson at the Latvian school! It is a searchable electronic catalog of educational materials needed by diaspora schools, freely available to anyone interested. You can find out more about this on the ALA website (in Latvian).

ALA Secretary Organizes Baltic Day in Oregon

On May 18, Baltic Americans in the Portland, Oregon area commemorated Baltic Day with song and dance performances, delicious food, as well as short speeches from representatives of each community. The annual event in its third year was co-organized by ALA Secretary Ieva Dexter along with local Estonian and Lithuanian groups, and hosted by the Oregon Latvian Community Center. From the Latvian side, the Portland folklore group performed songs playing kokles. ALA’s Director of Public Affairs Dzintars Dzilna addressed the gathering, urging participants to use their power as United States constituents and contact their Members of Congress to help protect our collective interests in the Baltics. Moscow is increasing its aggression not just in Ukraine, but also against the Baltics, other NATO allies and partners, and the United States with cyber attacks, sabotage of infrastructure, military violations of airspace - and most recently - jamming of GPS systems on commercial flights. It is critical for Congress to ensure further U.S. assistance for the Baltics as they develop their defenses to deter aggression from Russia, enable strong U.S. support of Ukraine in order to fully defeat Russia, and safeguard strong U.S. leadership in a strong NATO.
