Eiropas Parlamenta 2024. gada vēlēšanas

Eiropas Parlamenta (EP) vēlēšanas ASV dzīvojošiem Latvijas pilsoņiem varētu šķist attālas vai nenozīmīgas, taču atgādināsim, ka šie ievēlētie cilvēki pārstāv Latvijas intereses Eiropas Savienībā un attiecīgi balso par Latvijai un Latvijas pilsoņiem nozīmīgiem jautājumiem neatkarīgi, kur šie Latvijas pilsoņi dzīvo. Viens no šodien nozīmīgākiem jautājumiem, piemēram, ir Latvijas drošība, kura ir būtiska mums visiem. ALA, sadarbībā ar PBLA, aicina ASV dzīvojošos Latvijas pilsoņus aktīvāk sekot līdzi 2024. gada Eiropas Parlamenta vēlēšanām un nopietni apsvērt balsot. Vēlēšanas notiks šā gada 8. jūnijā iecirkņos, vai pa pastu no 4. līdz 31.maijam. Par iespējamiem vēlēšanu iecirkņiem ASV informācija būs zināma pēc 30. marta. Palīdzēsim arī labāk saprast pasta balsošanas noteikumus. Tos jau tagad variet atrast Centrālās vēlēšanas komisijas (CVK) mājas lapā šeit. Pasta balsošanai būs vajadzīga e-ID kartiņa, kuru jūs varat nokārtot Latvijas vēstniecības Vašingtonā D.C. konsulārā nodaļā. CVK mājas lapā variet arī iepazīties ar kandidātiem un politisko spēku programmām. Iesakām arī sekot līdzi CVK Facebook lapai!

ALA Labdarība Latvijā nozare aicina atbalstīt topošās mediķes Līgu Atstupenu, Katrīnu Ozolu un Madaru Zadovsku

Labdarība Latvijā aktīvi atbalsta programmu “Spārno talantus”, kur tiek izvirzīts jaunieši no biedrības “Eņģeļa sirds” redzeslokā nonākušiem talantīgiem jauniešiem no maznodrošinātām ģimenēm Latvijā. Šīs ģimenes nespēj apmaksāt papildu izglītojošas nodarbības vai nometnes, kurās viņu atvase varētu izkopt un attīstīt kādu īpašu talantu.

Līga ir aktīva, gudra un apzinīga meitene ar mērķtiecīgu skatu nākotnē. Viņa mācās Pilsrundāles vidusskolas 11.klasē. Līgai ir augsti sasniegumi mācībās, kā arī viņa padziļināti apgūst nepieciešamos mācību priekšmetus, lai gūtu priekšzināšanas savā nākotnes profesijas jomā – medicīnā. Pēc vidusskolas Līga vēlas studēt Rīgas Stradiņa universitātē medicīnu, lai iegūtu ārsta grādu, un eventuāli kļūt par onkologu-ķīmijterapeitu. Šo virzienu izvēlējās, jo Latvijā un pasaulē ir liela onkoloģisko slimību statistika. Līga aktīvi iesaistās arī nevalstiskajā jauniešu organizācijā “Inicio”, kur viņa mācās pasākumu organizēšanu, kā arī publisko uzstāšanos, kas ir svarīgas prasmes dzīvē.

“Spārno Talantus!” dalībniece Katrīna ir ļoti apņēmīga meitene, un mācās Limbažu vidusskolas 9.klasē. Šobrīd meitenes prioritāte ir mācības, jo viņa aktīvi gatavojas iestājeksāmeniem Rīgas Klasiskajā vidusskolā, kas skolēniem piedāvā mācību programmu ar novirzi medicīnā. Katrīna pati stāsta, ka viņu ļoti interesē priekšmeti “anatomija” un “ievads medicīnā. Aizraušanās ar medicīnu aizsākās meitenes personīgās pieredzes dēļ. Katrīnai tika uzstādīta diagnoze – onkoloģiska saslimšana. Ilgstoši uzturoties slimnīcā un ārstējoties, Katrīna saprata, ka savu nākotni grib saistīt ar medicīnu.

Madara, kura mācās Druvas vidusskolas 11.klasē, ir ļoti aktīva un motivēta jauniete. "Madara ir vienmēr un visur, kur viņai ir jābūt." Tā par Madaru saka klases biedri. Mācībās meitenei ir ļoti augsti sasniegumi - viņa piedalās dažādās olimpiādēs, kur gūst godalgotas vietas. Paralēli mācībām, Madara ir savas vidusskolas skolēnu prezidente. Viņa stāsta, ka vēlas pasauli padarīt labāku, ko viņa cer panākt, nākotnē kļūstot par ģimenes ārsti, lai palīdzētu cilvēkiem izveseļoties un justies laimīgākiem. Meitene plāno studēt RSU. Un ļoti vēlas piedalīties kursos, nometnēs un nodarbībās, kur varētu mācīties un pilnveidoties.

Visas topošās mediķes ir ļoti ieinteresētas apgūt arvien vairāk zināšanu un praktisku iemaņu, tāpēc meitenes ļoti vēlas piedalīties vienīgajā medicīnas nometnē, kas tiek rīkota Baltijas valstīs šogad – Big Brain Medicīnas nometne. Tā notiks augustā un dalībnieki varēs iejusties mediķu lomā, veicot dažādas praktiskus uzdevumus, un iemācīsies ļoti daudz teorētisku zināšanu. Maksa par dalību vienai personai ir 548 EUR. Lai atbalstītu šīs topošās mediķes, aicinām ziedot ALA Labdarība Latvijā projektam Spārno talantus, ar norādi “medicīnas nometne”.

ALA Sporta nozare aicina pieteikties meistarsacīkstēm volejbolā un basketbolā

ALA 67. meistarsacīkstes volejbolā un basketbolā tiek plānotas Klīvlandē 25./26. maijā. Rīkotāji ir uzstādījuši Facebook lapu - ALA's 67. Meistarsacīkstes Klīvlandē/ ALA 67. Masters Tournament. Spēļu norises konkrētā vieta būs atkarīga no pieteikto komandu skaita. Aicinām visus aktīvi pieteikties pēc iespējas ātrāk! Rīkotāji ziņo, ka turnīrs plānots sastāvēt no vīriešu un sieviešu volejbola, kā arī vīriešu basketbola komandām. Jebkura persona var brīvi reģistrēt komandas, bet vēlams tomēr pievienoties vietējās pilsētas sporta asociācijas komandām. Ja vēlaties spēlēt, bet jums nav komandas, rīkotāji jums palīdzēsim to atrast. Turnīrā var piedalīties visi latviešu izcelsmes spēlētāji, kā arī tie, kuru dzīvesbiedri ir latviešu izcelsmes. Tiek gaidīti spēlētāji no ASV, Latvijas un Kanādas. Rīkotāji īpaši aicina piedalīties JAUNĀKO paaudzi. Baltijas Aizstāvības dienas Vašingtonā, D.C.

Sadarbojoties ar Apvienoto baltiešu komiteju (JBANC), Amerikas latviešu apvienība aicina ASV balsstiesīgos tautiešus piedalīties 2024. gada Baltijas Aizstāvības dienās Vašingtonā D.C 8.-12. aprīlī. Ir svarīgi regulāri uzrunāt ASV Kongresa senatorus un deputātus par likumprojektiem un jautājumiem, kas saistīti ar Baltijas aizsardzību un attīstību. Lūdzam jūs pieteikties dalībai Aizstāvības dienas pasākumos reģistrējoties šeit.

ALA Izglītības nozare rīko Valodas līmeņu pārbaudījumus ASV latviešu skolās

Valodas līmeņu pārbaudījumi notiek divas reizes gadā: pavasarī un rudenī. Tie notiek elektroniski, iepriekš piesakoties pārbaudījumu vadītājai Dacei Mažeikai. Šī pavasara pārbaudījumi bija 16. un 17. martā. Pārbaudījumi ir rīks, kas palīdz skolēniem, viņu ģimenēm un skolotājiem saprast, ko skolēns ir apguvis latviešu valodā. Tie dod precizitāti domai: “Mans bērns saprot, bet nerunā latviski”, vai “Manam skolēnam ir laba valoda”. Pārbaudījumi izmanto sistēmu, ko izveidoja Eiropas Savienībā, lai noteiktu, cik labi kāds prot svešvalodu. Sistēmai ir 3 burti un katram burtam cipars 1 vai 2. A līmenis ir iesācēju līmenis. A1 līmenī valodu apgūst, bet ļoti grūti izteikties un saprast teikto. B līmenis ir vidēja pratēja līmenis. B2 līmeņa skolēni prot daudz vārdu un izsakās samērā brīvi ar maz kļūdām. Daudzi ASV latviešu skolu bērni ir starp A2 un B1 valodas prasmes līmeņiem. C līmenis ir pieaugušo līmenis, kurā prot valodu tik labi, ka var strādāt savā profesijas darbā Latvijā. Valodas līmeņu apraksti ir daudzi, te atrodama pašvērtējuma tabula. ALA pārbaudījumus piedāvā skolēniem pamatskolas līmenī (5. - 7. klasēm) un vidusskolas līmenī (8.-12. klasei). ALA piedāvā A1, A2, B1 un B2 līmeņu pārbaudījumus. Skolēnus pārbauda lasītprasmē, klausīšanās prasmē, rakstītprasmē un runātprasmē. Pirmajos gados pārbaudījumiem bija vajadzīga skolotāju komanda, kas tos pieņēma un laboja, bet kopš pandēmijas pārbaudījumi notiek tiešsaistē, skolēniem izmantojot datoru, lai atbildētu uz jautājumiem. Pārbaudījumu rezultāti ir standartizēti, skola un skolēns saņem pārskatu par saviem rezultātiem. Zinot savu valodas līmeni, skolēni saredz konkrētu progresu savas valodas apguvē, vecākiem arī ir skaidrāk, ko skolēns prot un pie kā jāpiestrādā. Skolai un skolotājiem ir skaidrāk kā dalīt skolēnus grupās, ko sagaidīt no skolēniem, kā diferencēt uzdevumus skolēnu vajadzībām. Zinot vairāk par sevi un savām valodas prasmēm, varam veicināt pilnīgāku valodas apguvi Amerikas latviešu skolās!

ALA Kultūras nozare atbalsta Baltijas Filmu festivālu Bostonā

Šā gada martā veiksmīgi noritējis Bostonas Baltijas filmu festivāls, kura atbalstītāju sarakstā parādās arī ALA kultūras nozare. Šis ir ikgadējs notikums, kas pulcē kopā kino entuziastus un Baltijas valstu kultūras mīļotājus gan klātienē, gan attālināti, piedāvājot ieskatu un atbalstu Baltijas reģiona kino industriju jaunradei. Festivāls sniedz iespēju skatītājiem apbrīnot gan atzītus kino darbus, gan atklāt jaunus talantus no Latvijas, Lietuvas un Igaunijas. Ar daudzveidīgu filmu programmu, lekcijām, diskusijām un viesu uzstāšanos, Bostonas Baltijas Filmu festivāls veido platformu, kurā var izcelt Baltijas valstu kino kultūras bagātību un daudzveidību. PBLA vadība un valdes delegācija beigusi darba vizīti Rīgā

Pasaules Brīvo latviešu apvienības (PBLA) un tās dalīborganizāciju – Amerikas latviešu apvienības, Latviešu Nacionālās apvienības Kanadā, Eiropas latviešu apvienības – pārstāvji no 19. līdz 24. februārim uzturējās darba vizītē Rīgā, lai pārrunātu PBLA darbības prioritātes 2024. gadam un saskaņotu tās ar Latvijas valdību, ministrijām un sadarbības partneriem. PBLA delegācijas kodolu veidoja priekšsēdis Pēteris Blumbergs (Vašingtona), PBLA vicepriekšēde Mārīte Kļaviņa (Frankfurte), Eiropas latviešu apvienības priekšsēde Justīne Krēsliņa (Stokholma), Amerikas latviešu apvienības (ALA) priekšsēdis Mārtiņš Andersons (San Francisko), Latviešu Nacionālās apvienības Kanadā valdes priekšsēdis Fritz Traugott-Kristbergs, un Eiropas latviešu apvienības prezidija locekles Karolīne Zobens East, Vita Kalniņa un Lelde Vikmane, kā arī PBLA pārstāvniecības darbinieki – izpilddirektors Raits Eglītis un tās vadītājs Jānis Andersons. ALA priekšsēdis piedalās Diasporas konsultatīvās padomes sēdē

2024. gada 23. februārī notika šī gada pirmā Diasporas konsultatīvās padomes (DKP) sēde. Sēdes darba kārtībā bija diskusija par diasporas iesaisti Valsts aizsardzības dienestā, par diasporas balsošanas iespējām 2024. gada Eiropas Parlamenta vēlēšanās, par remigrējušo Latvijas valstspiederīgo uzkrātās pensijas pārnesi uz Latviju un nodokļiem, kā arī par plānotajiem LU DMPC pētījumiem 2024.gadā. Ziņojumus par padarīto un 2024. darbības gada plāniem arī nolasīja PBLA, ALA, ELA, LNAK un citu diasporas organizāciju pārstāvji. “Hello, Latvia!” 2024

European Parliament Elections

The European Parliament (EP) elections might seem distant or insignificant to Latvian citizens living in the US, but let us remind you that these elected people represent Latvia's interests in the European Union and accordingly vote on important issues for Latvia and Latvian citizens, regardless of where these Latvian citizens live. One of the most important issues today, for example, is Latvia's security, which is essential for all of us. ALA, in cooperation with WFFL/PBLA, invites Latvian citizens living in the USA to more actively follow the 2024 European Parliament elections and seriously consider voting. Elections will be held on June 8 this year at polling stations, or by mail from May 4 to 31. Information about possible polling stations in the USA will be known after March 30. We will also help you better understand the rules of postal voting. You can already find them on the website of the Central Election Commission (CVK) here. For voting by mail, you will need an e-ID card, which you can get at the Embassy of Latvia in Washington, D.C. in the consular department here. You can also familiarize yourself with the candidates and programs of political forces on the CVK website. We also recommend following CVK's Facebook page!

Support Future Medics Līga Atstupena, Katrīna Ozola and Madara Zadovska

The Office of Aid and Support to Latvia actively supports the program "Spārno talantus”, where one of the talented young people from low-income families in Latvia who have come to the attention of the association "Enģeļa sirds" is nominated. These families are unable to pay for additional educational classes or camps where their offspring could cultivate and develop a special talent.

Līga is an active, smart and conscientious girl with a purposeful view of the future. She studies in the 11th grade of Pilsrundāle secondary school. Liga has high academic achievements, as well as she is studying the necessary subjects in depth to gain preliminary knowledge in her future profession - medicine. After high school, Līga wants to study medicine at Riga Stradins University to obtain a doctor's degree and eventually become an oncologist-chemotherapist. She chose this direction because the statistics of oncological diseases are high in Latvia and in the world. Līga is also actively involved in the non-governmental youth organization "Inicio", where she learns how to organize events, as well as public speaking, which are important skills in life.

"Wing Talents!" Participant Katrīna is a very determined girl and studies in the 9th grade of Limbažu Secondary School. At the moment, the girl's priority is studies, as she is actively preparing for entrance exams at the Riga Classical High School, which offers students a curriculum with a focus on medicine. Katrina herself says that she is very interested in the subjects "anatomy" and "introduction to medicine”. The passion for medicine started because of the girl's personal experience. Katrina was diagnosed with oncological disease. After a long stay in the hospital and treatment, Katrina realized that she wanted to connect her future with medicine.

Madara, who studies in the 11th grade of Druva secondary school, is a very active and motivated young woman. "Madara is always and everywhere she needs to be." That's what classmates say about Madara. In studies, the girl has very high achievements - she participates in various educational Olympiads, where she gets prize-winning places. Along with her studies, Madara is the student body president of her high school. She says she wants to make the world a better place, which she hopes to achieve by becoming a family doctor in the future to help people get better and be happier. The girl plans to study at RSU. And they really want to participate in courses, camps and classes where they could learn and improve.

All future female doctors are very interested in learning more and more knowledge and practical skills, so the girls are very eager to participate in the only medical camp that is being held in the Baltic States this year – Big Brain Medical Camp. It will take place in August, and the participants will be able to assume the role of medics, performing various practical tasks, and will learn a lot of theoretical knowledge. The fee for participation per person is 548 EUR. To support these aspiring doctors, we invite you to donate to ALA Office of Aid and Support to Latvia, Enģeļa sirds with the note – “medical camp”.

ALA 67th Volleyball and Basketball Championships

The 67th ALA Volleyball and Basketball Championships are scheduled for Cleveland on the 25th/26th. in May. The organizers have set up a Facebook page - ALA's 67th Masters Tournament in Cleveland/ ALA 67th Masters Tournament. The exact location of the games will depend on the number of teams registered. We invite everyone to actively apply as soon as possible!

The tournament will consist of Men's and Woman's Volleyball, Men's Basketball. As an open tournament, all individuals are free to register teams. Though it is preferred to join the teams of your local city's sports association. If you want to play but don't have a team, we will help you find one (Please e-mail). Tournament is OPEN to all players of Latvian heritage and those who's spouses are of Latvian heritage. Teams from Canada, USA welcome. We are especially interested in getting the younger generation involved and participate in the tournament. Currently the exact location for the events is unknown. It will be determined by the number of teams and registered participants. PLEASE REGISTER ASAP so that we can ensure a successful tournament and continue the longstanding tradition. Baltic Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C.

In cooperation with the Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC), the American Latvian Association invites citizens of the United States with the right to vote to participate in the 2024 Baltic Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C. on April 8-12. It is important to regularly address senators and members of the US Congress on bills and issues related to the protection and development of the Baltics. We ask you to apply for participation in the Advocacy Days events by registering here.

Latvian Language Proficiency Exams

Language proficiency exams are held twice a year: in spring and autumn. They take place electronically, upon prior application to the test leader Dace Mažeika. This spring's exams were on March 16 and 17. Exams are a tool that helps students, their families and teachers understand what the student has learned in Latvian. They give precision to the thought: "My child understands, but does not speak Latvian", or "My student has a good language". The tests use a system set up in the European Union to determine how well someone knows a foreign language. The system has 3 letters and for each letter a number 1 or 2. Level A is the beginner level. At A1 level, the language is learned, but it is very difficult to express and understand what is said. Level B is an intermediate level. Students at B2 level know many words and express themselves relatively freely with few mistakes. Many Latvian school children in the USA are between A2 and B1 language proficiency levels. Level C is the level of adults who know the language so well that they can work in their profession in Latvia. There are many descriptions of language levels, here you can find a self-assessment table. ALA tests are offered to students at the elementary school level (grades 5-7) and high school (grades 8-12). ALA offers tests at A1, A2, B1 and B2 levels. Students are tested in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. In the early years, the tests required a team of teachers to take and correct them, but since the pandemic, the tests have been conducted online, with students using computers to answer the questions. Test results are standardized, the school and the student receive an overview of their results. By knowing their language level, students can see concrete progress in learning their language, parents also have a clearer idea of what the student knows and what needs to be worked on. It is clearer for the school and the teachers how to divide the students into groups, what to expect from the students, how to differentiate the tasks according to the needs of the students. By knowing more about our selves and our language skills, we can promote more complete language learning in American Latvian schools.

ALA Office of Cultural Affairs Supports Boston Baltic Film Festival

In March of this year, the Boston Baltic Film Festival was successfully held. Its list of supporters also includes the ALA Cultural Office! This is an annual event that brings together film enthusiasts and culture lovers of the Baltic countries, both in person and remotely, offering insight and support for the creativity of the Baltic region's film industry. The festival gives the audience the opportunity to admire both recognized cinema works and to discover new talents from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. With a diverse program of films, lectures, discussions and guest performances, the Boston Baltic Film Festival creates a platform where the richness and diversity of the film culture of the Baltic countries can be highlighted. WFFL Work Visit to Riga

From February 19 to 24, representatives of the World Federation of Free Latvians (WFFL/PBLA) and its member organizations - the American Latvian Association, the Latvian National Federation in Canada, and the European Latvian Association - were on a working visit to Riga to discuss the PBLA's operational priorities for 2024 and coordinate them with Latvia's governments, ministries and cooperation partners. The core of the PBLA delegation was made up of president Pēteris Blumbergs (Washington, DC), vice president of PBLA Mārīte Kļaviņa (Frankfurt), president of the European Latvian Association Justīne Krēsliņa (Stockholm), president of the American Latvian Association (ALA) Mārtiņš Andersons (San Francisco), president of the board of the Latvian National Federation in Canada Fritz Traugott-Kristbergs, and members of the presidium of the European Latvian Association Karolīne Zobens East, Vita Kalniņa and Lelde Vikmane, as well as employees of the PBLA representative office - executive director Raits Eglītis and manager Jānis Andersons. ALA President Participates in Diaspora Consultative Council Meeting

On February 23, 2024, the first meeting of the year for the Diaspora Consultative Council (DKP) was held. The agenda of the meeting included a discussion on the involvement of the diaspora in the National Defense Service, on the possibilities of the diaspora voting in the 2024 European Parliament elections, on the transfer of the accumulated pension of remigrated Latvian citizens to Latvia and taxes, as well as on the planned LU DMPC studies in 2024. Representatives of PBLA, ALA, ELA, LNAK and other diaspora organizations also read reports on the achievements and plans for the year 2024.
