Aizvadīta ALA valdes rudens sēde Katskiļos

ALA valdes rudens sēde klātienē notika no 25. līdz 27. augustam Katskiļos, skaistajā Ņujorkas ev. lut. draudzes lauku īpašumā. Daži valdes locekļi bija arī pieslēgušies attālināti. Sēdē arī piedalījās Latvijas vēstniecības ASV vadītāja vietnieks Jānis Beķeris, kā arī PBLA priekšsēdis Pēteris Blumbergs. Liela daļa laika tika veltīts 72. Kongresa plānošanas pārrunām. ALA sveic ASV latviešu skolas saimes un aicina pieteikties skolotāju konferencei

Septembra mēnesī mūsu bērni atgriežas ne tikai amerikāņu skolu solos, bet arī savās latviešu skolās. Visi ir vasarā paaugušies un, cerams, labi atpūtušies. ALA valde sveic visas latviešu skolu saimes un novēl labas sekmes jaunajā mācību gadā! ALA izglītības nozare jau aicina skolotājus un vecākus pieteikties gadskārtējai skolotāju konferencei, kura notiks Čikāgā no 20. līdz 22. oktobrim. Pieteikšanās ir līdz 7. oktobrim. ALA Sabiedrisko attiecību nozare izsūta šī gada trešo Call to Action izsaukumu

ALA ir izsūtījusi šī gada trešo Baltic Call to Action savai epastu aktīvistu UNIT grupai, lai kontaktēt savus ASV Kongresa senatorus un pārstāvjus par likumprojektiem un atbalstu saistīti ar Baltijas valstu aizsardzību. ALA Baltic Call to Action UNIT darba grupa piedāvā tekstus ko dalībnieki var pielietot, lai uzrunātu ASV valdību. Trešā izsaukumā, teksti informē pārstāvjus par vajadzību turpināt atbalstīt Ukrainu savā cīņā izdzīt Krievijas iebrukumu, kā arī piedāvāt financējumu Baltic Security Initiative, un nodrošināt ASV ilgtermiņu līderību stiprā NATO. ALA valde aicina ikkatru Latvijas interešu aizstāvi uzņemties izpildīt savu pilsonisko līdzdalības daļu un uzrunāt savus ASV valdības ievēlētos pārstāvjus. Ikviens nosūtīts vēstījums veicina ļoti svarīgu mērķi - nodrošināt Latvijas un Baltijas valstu aizsardzību. ALA Labdarība Latvijā nozare piesaka jaunu biedrības “Eņģeļa sirds” veiksmes stāstu – Zani Bajāri

Labdarība Latvijā aktīvi atbalsta programmu “Spārno talantus!”, kurā tiek izvirzīts viens no biedrības “Eņģeļa sirds” redzeslokā nonākušiem talantīgiem jauniešiem no maznodrošinātām ģimenēm Latvijā. Šīs ģimenes nespēj apmaksāt papildu izglītojošas nodarbības vai nometnes, kurās viņu atvase varētu izkopt un atīstīt kādu īpašu talantu.

Šī mēneša projekta “Spārno Talantus!” dalībniece četrpadsmit gadīgā Zane Bajāre dzīvo Bauskas novadā. Viņa mācās 7.klasē Rīgas Strazdumuižas vidusskolā. Meitenes skola ir tālu no mājām, jo šajā skolā tiek nodrošināta atbilstošā metodika, kas Zanei nepieciešama vājredzības dēļ. Neraugoties uz to Zane ir ļoti apņēmīga, mērķtiecīga un īsta cīnītāja. Pārvarot dažādas grūtības, meitene ir kļuvusi ļoti patstāvīga un šobrīd aktīvi attīsta savu talantu – tapošanu.

Ar tapošanu Zane iepazinās skolā. Šī nodarbe meiteni ļoti aizrāva, un viņa sāka tapot arī mājās uz grābekļa. Vecāki atbalstot meitu, nodrošināja dažādas dzijas, kā arī tētis pats izgatavoja vairākus tapotājus, lai Zane varētu turpināt attīstīt savas prasmes, darinot šalles. Meitenes ģimene ļoti priecājās ar Zanes paveikto un palīdzēja meitenei reklamēt un pārdot dažādos darinājumus. Par pirmo nopelnīto naudiņu Zane uzdāvināja dzīvnieku rotaļlietas un barību Jelgavas Dzīvnieku patversmei.

Zane vēlētos organizēt tapošanas meistarklases, lai savu mīlestību pret šo nodarbi spētu nodot arī citiem. Maeitene arī ļoti gribētu sākt veidot lielformāta darbus, tapojot segas un gultas pārklāju. Tam ir nepieciešami lielāki tapotāji, kā arī daudz vairāk dzijas, ko šobrīd ģimene nevar atļauties nodrošināt.

Lai palīdzētu Zanei viņas talanta izaugsmes ceļā, ir nepieciešams līdzcilvēku atbalsts, nodrošinot tapošanas inventāru un dažāda veida dzijas. Iespējams, tieši Jūsu atbalsta dēļ Zane varēs turpināt attīstīt savu ideju par tapošanas meistarklasēm, kurās mācīs šo radošo tehniku jau citiem!

ALA apsveic Rietumkrasta latviešu izglītības centru 40. gada jubilejā

Trīs dienas septembra sākumā, Rietumkrasta latviešu izglītības centrs (RKLIC) svinēja savu 40. gadu jubileju ar ballēm, dziedāšanu, dejošanu un atmiņām starp labiem draugiem paaudžu paaudzēm. ALA Sabiedrisko attiecību vadītājs Dzintars Dzilna apsveica RKLIC saimi, pateicoties par lielo darbu ko sabiedrība ir ieguldījusi un turpina veicināt. Vasarās RKLIC piedāvā Mežotnes bērnu nometni, Kursas vidusskolu, Jāņu svinēšanu, un dažādus sabiedriskus pasākumus visu gadu.

Ziedot.lv svin savu 20. gadadienu un pasakas saviem atbalstītājiem

Plaši pazīstamā nevalstiskā organizācija Ziedot.lv nupat nosvinējusi apaļu jubileju – 20. gadus. Svētki tika atzīmēti Latvijā Nordeķu muižā, kurā pulcējās viesi, kas sveica organizācijas darbiniekus un vadītāju Rūtu Dimantu. Viesu vidū bija ALA Kultūras Fonda vadītāja Inese Stravelli. ALA sadarbība ar Ziedot.lv ir bijusi ļoti veiksmīga un esam pateicīgi, ka šādā veidā ALA ir varējusi atbalstīt Ukrainas tautu šajā grūtajā laikā. Apsveicēju vidū bija arī valsts augstākās amatpersonas - Valsts prezidents Edgars Rinkēvičs un Saeimas priekšsēdētājs Edvards Smiltēns. Vairāk par šo variet lasīt šeit.

Par LU Diasporas un migrācijas pētījumu centru

Viens no daudziem Latvijas Universitātes Diasporas un migrācijas pētījumu centra uzdevumiem ir apzināt Latvijas diasporas pārstāvjus un sadarboties ar viņiem mūsdienīgas migrācijas procesu pētīšanai, izveidojot saziņas, priekšlikumu izteikšanas un aktuālās informācijas izplatīšanas sistēmu diasporas organizācijām. Ziņojam, ka ALA ir uzsākusi sadarbību ar šo pētījumu centru, lai kopā mēs varētu sakopot gan vērtīgus datus gan par ALA, gan ALA biedrorganizāciju darbību. “Digital ABCs” nevalstiskajām organizācijām ir meistarklašu cikls, kas sniedz digitālos rīkus, labāko praksi un dziļāku ieskatu tehnoloģiju risinājumos, kas noderēs NVO pārstāvjiem darbā un ikdienā. Programmas valoda būs angļu un tā pilnībā notiks virtuālajā vidē, kas nozīmē, ka tajā var pievienoties ikviens no jebkuras vietas pasaulē. Forums: Diaspora – (ne)atņemama Latvijas informatīvās telpas daļa?

Lai stiprinātu Latvijas diasporas pozīcijas informatīvajā telpā, izvērtētu, cik lielu daļu ārpus Latvijas dzīvojošo tautiešu sasniedz Latvijas un diasporas mediji, kā arī diasporas organizācijas, un kopā meklētu veidus, kā dzīvot vienotā informatīvajā telpā, nevis atsevišķos “burbuļos”, 28. septembrī Rīgā Latviesi.com sadarbībā ar Pasaules Brīvo Latviešu Apvienību (PBLA) rīkos forumu “Diaspora – (ne)atņemama Latvijas informatīvās telpas daļa?”. Forumā aicināti piedalīties arī latvieši no visas pasaules, sekojot līdzi diskusijām tiešsaistē https://www.facebook.com/latviesicom un sniedzot savu viedokli par pārrunājamiem jautājumiem. Jau 9. reizi diasporas amatierteātri tiksies festivālā “LAIPA”

No 26. līdz 29. oktobrim Sanfrancisko, Kalifornijā norisināsies 9. latviešu diasporas amatierteātru festivāls “LAIPA”. Tajā piedalīsies 10 amatierteātri no 8 valstīm - Anglijas, ASV, Beļģijas, Islandes, Latvijas, Norvēģijas, Vācijas un Zviedrijas. Festivālā aktieri spēlēs latviešu autoru lugas un varēs piedalīties ar skatuvi saistītās, taču tematiski atšķirīgās meistarklasēs. Tās vadīs teātra nozares profesionāļi no Latvijas. Festivāls “LAIPA” ir ceļojošs – katru gadu to organizē kāds no diasporas amatierteātriem. 2022. gada festivāls notika Oslo, Norvēģijā, bet nākamā festivāla norises vietu paziņos “LAIPA 2023” noslēgumā. Šī gada festivālu rīko Sanfrancisko Jaunais teātris režisores Māras Lewis vadībā. Šī ir pirmā reize, kad festivāls notiek ārpus Eiropas, dalībniekiem ceļojot uz Ameriku. Līdz šim festivāls “LAIPA” norisinājies Lielbritānijā, Latvijā, Īrijā, Norvēģijā, Beļģijā, Islandē, Vācijā.

“LAIPA 2023” organizatoru pārstāve, režisore Māra Lewis par šīgada festivālu saka: “Festivāls “LAIPA” ir kā ģimenes salidojums, kur vienu reizi gadā visi tiekas kopā. Protams, kā jau īstā ģimenē notiek – kāds atkrīt, pienāk klāt jauni ģimenes locekļi. Mēs viens par otru stāvam un krītam. Piedalies 9. Pasaules diktāta rakstīšanā latviešu valodā

Šogad Pasaules diktāts latviešu valodā norisināsies sestdienā, 14. oktobrī, pulksten 12:15 (Pēc Latvijas laika). Šī būs jau devītā diktāta norises reize, un šogad tekstu diktātam radījis rakstnieks Māris Bērziņš, savukārt Rīgā – Gaismas pilī – to diktēs Latvijas Nacionālā teātra aktrise Agnese Budovska. Pasaules diktāts latviešu valodā ir privāta iniciatīva, kuras mērķis ir attīstīt latviešu valodu un stiprināt tās saknes mūsdienu multikulturālajā vidē. Deviņu gadu laikā no neliela valodas entuziastu rīkota pasākuma tas ir izaudzis par starptautisku projektu, kurā pērn piedalījās 2000 interesentu no 29 valstīm. Katru gadu kāds no mūsdienu latviešu rakstniekiem rada aptuveni 300 vārdu tekstu, ko diktē kāds slavens latviešu aktieris. Diktāta dalībniekiem atzīmes netiek liktas, un diktātu var rakstīt, gan norādot savu vārdu, gan anonīmi, jo iniciatīvas mērķis ir sniegt iespēju ikvienam novērtēt zināšanas latviešu valodas pareizrakstībā. Labākajiem diktāta dalībniekiem tiks pasniegtas dāvanas no diktāta sadarbības partneriem. Interesenti, kuri diktātu būs rakstījuši klātienē, ar sava darba kļūdu labojumu varēs iepazīties attiecīgajās norises vietās, savukārt tie, kuri uzdevumu būs pildījuši tiešsaistē, kļūdu labojumu varēs apskatīt interneta vietnē www.raksti.org pāris mēnešu laikā pēc pasākuma norises. If you want to learn more about ALA's programs and meet representatives of other Latvian organizations in the US, as well as ALA board members and office staff, then come to ALA's 72nd Congress! There is still time to apply for the 72nd Congress of the American Latvian Association (ALA)! This year's congress will be held October 12-15 in Carmel, Indiana! The ALA Congress is for everyone - especially this year we will offer discussion topics that are also of interest to those Latvians in the US who do not have a vote as a delegate and/or have not previously attended the ALA Congress. A room at the congress hotel can be reserved until September 22nd on the Marriott hotel website here. Delegate registration and guest sign-ups take place until October 1st.

ALA's Autumn Board Meeting in the Catskills

The fall meeting of the ALA board was held in person from August 25 to 27 in Katskiļi (Catskills), the beautiful New York Latvian Ev. Lut. Church's rural property. Some board members also joined remotely. The meeting was also attended by Jānis Beķeris, Deputy Head of the Embassy of Latvia in the USA, as well as Pēteris Blumbergs, Chairman of WFFL/PBLA. Much of the time was devoted to planning discussions for the 72nd Congress. Also, reports from each branch of ALA were heard, as well as decisions were made as part of the board's strategic planning process. ALA Education Office Greeting & Teacher Conference

In the month of September, our children return not only to American school desks, but also to their Latvian schools. Everyone has grown up over the summer and hopefully had a good rest. The ALA board welcomes all Latvian school families and wishes them good luck in the new school year! The ALA Education Office is already inviting teachers and parents to apply for its annual teacher conference, which will be held in Chicago, October 20-22. Registration is open until October 7. ALA Public Affairs Office Issues This Year’s Third Call to Action

ALA has issued this year's third Baltic Call to Action to its email activist UNIT group, to contact Member of Congress about legislation and support for Baltic security. The ALA Baltic Call to Action UNIT Management Committee offers informed, customized texts that participants can easily send to their own senators and House representatives. The latest Call's texts inform officials about the need to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight to drive out the Russian invasion, as well as appropriate funds for the Baltic Security Initiative, and ensure long-term U.S. leadership in a strong NATO. ALA invites every Latvian American to apply their power as American citizens and address their elected representatives to protect their interests in the Baltics. ALA Support & Aid to Latvia “Angel Heart” Program - Support Zane Bajāre!

The Office of Support & Aid to Latvia actively supports the program "Spārno talantus", where one of the talented young people from low-income families in Latvia who have come to the attention of the association "Eņģeļu Sirds" is nominated. These families are unable to pay for additional educational classes or camps where their child could cultivate and develop a special talent.

This month's participant is fourteen-year-old Zane Bajāre, who lives in Bauska. She studies in the 7th grade at Riga Strazdumuiža secondary school. The girl's school is far from home, as this school provides the appropriate methodology that Zane needs due to her low vision. Despite this, Zane is very determined and goal oriented. Overcoming various difficulties, the girl has become very independent and is currently actively developing her talent – loom knitting.

Zane learned about this unique knitting at school. The girl was very fascinated by this activity, and she also began to work on a rake weaver at home. The parents, supporting their daughter, provided various yarns, and the father also made several weavers himself, so that Zane could continue to develop her skills in making scarves. The girl's family was very happy with what Zane had done and helped the girl promote and sell her work. With her first earned money, Zane donated animal toys and food to the Jelgava Animal Shelter.

Zane would like to organize crafting master classes so that she can pass on her love for this activity to others. Also she would really like to start creating large-format works, making quilts and bedspreads. This requires larger weavers, as well as much more yarn, which the family cannot afford to provide at the moment.

Helping Zane on her talent journey requires the support of her peers, providing crafting supplies and different types of yarn. Perhaps it is because of your support that Zane will be able to continue developing her idea of master classes in which she will teach this creative technique to others!

ALA Congratulates the West Coast Latvian Education Center on 40th Anniversary

For three days at the beginning of September, the West Coast Latvian Education Center (WCLEC) celebrated its 40th anniversary with festivities, singing, dancing and memories between good friends over different generations. ALA’s Director of Public Affairs Dzintars Dzilna congratulated WCLEC’s community, thanking its members for the work they have invested and continue to do. During the summer, WCLEC offers Mežotne children’s camp, Kursa high school camp and a Midsummer night celebration, as well as social gatherings year-round.

The well-known NGO Ziedot.lv has just celebrated its 20th anniversary! The holiday was celebrated in Latvia at the Nordeķu manor, where guests gathered to greet the organization's employees and director Rūta Dimanta. The head of the ALA Cultural Foundation, Inese Stravelli, was among the guests. ALA's cooperation with Ziedot.lv has been very successful and we are grateful that ALA has been able to support the Ukrainian people in this difficult time with the help of this partner. Among the congratulators at the event were also the highest state officials - President Edgars Rinkēvičs and the Speaker of the Saeima Edvards Smiltēns. You can read more about this here.

LU Diaspora and Migration Research Center

One of the many tasks of the Center for Diaspora and Migration Studies of the University of Latvia is to identify the representatives of the Latvian diaspora and to cooperate with them in the study of modern migration processes, creating a system of communication, making proposals and distributing current information to diaspora organizations. We would like to announce that ALA has started cooperation with this research center so that together we can collect valuable data about the activities of ALA and ALA member organizations.   • Vija Celmiņa, a Latvian artist living in the United States, has become one of the laureates of "Praemium Imperiale 2023". It is an award given annually by the Imperial Family of Japan in five categories - painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theater/cinema arts. At the ceremony in the White House, attended by first lady Jill Biden, Celmiņa received an award in painting. The award also includes a cash prize of 15 million yen, or almost 95,000 euros. This time, the listeners will have the opportunity to meet the passionate musician in a chamber music program, which will feature sophisticated and powerfully emotional pieces from the works of Camille Sensans, György Ligeti and Dmitri Shostakovich. At the concert, the musician will share the stage with her former study partner, French-Belgian pianist Antoine Préat, who is recognized in France as one of the most talented pianists of his generation.

“Digital ABCs” for Non-governmental Organizations

“Digital ABCs” for non-governmental organizations is a series of masterclasses providing digital tools, best practices and deeper insights into technology solutions that will be useful to representatives of NGOs at work and in everyday life. The language of the program will be English and it will take place entirely in a virtual environment meaning that anyone from anywhere in the world is welcome to join. Participation in this program is free of charge to participants thanks to a grant from Google.org. The program will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays 17:30-19:30 CET, September 18 – December 6, 2023. Recordings will be available to view also after the live sessions. Forum on Diaspora & the Information Space

In order to strengthen the position of the Latvian diaspora in the information space, to evaluate how large a proportion of compatriots living outside of Latvia are reached by Latvian and diaspora media, as well as diaspora organizations, and to look together for ways to live in a single information space, not in individual "bubbles", on September 28 in Riga, Latvieši.com, in cooperation with the World Federation of Free Latvians (PBLA) will organize the forum "Diaspora - an (in)alienable part of the Latvian information space?". Latvians from all over the world are also invited to participate in the forum by following the discussions online at https://www.facebook.com/latviesicom and giving their opinion on the issues to be discussed. However, his forum will be held at 10:15 AM Latvian time, which is nighttime in North America! Diaspora Amateur Theater Groups Meet for the 9th Time at the "LAIPA" Festival

From October 26 to 29, the 9th Latvian Diaspora Amateur Theater Festival "LAIPA" will take place in San Francisco, California. 10 amateur theaters from 8 countries will participate - England, USA, Belgium, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Germany and Sweden. At the festival, actors will perform plays by Latvian authors and will be able to participate in stage-related but thematically different master classes. They will be led by theater industry professionals from Latvia. The "LAIPA" festival is traveling - every year it is organized by one of the amateur theaters of the diaspora. The 2022 festival was held in Oslo, Norway, but the location of the next festival will be announced at the end of "LAIPA 2023". This year's festival is hosted by the New Theater of San Francisco, directed by Mara Lewis. This is the first time the festival is held outside of Europe, with participants traveling to America. Until now, the "LAIPA" festival has taken place in Great Britain, Latvia, Ireland, Norway, Belgium, Iceland, Germany.

Director Māra Lewis, the representative of the organizers of "LAIPA 2023", says about this year's festival: "The festival "LAIPA" is like a family gathering, where everyone gets together once a year. Of course, as happens in a real family - someone falls away, new family members come along. We stand and fall for each other. We hurt along with each other's failures and we rejoice in others' successes, we look to the future. This year, our diaspora amateur theater family will meet in San Francisco, where we will warmly welcome everyone and not only present theater, but also show off the most beautiful places of San Francisco and go on joint excursions. The 9th World Dictation in Latvian

This year, the World Dictation in Latvian will take place on Saturday, October 14, at 12:15PM (Latvian time). This will be the ninth time the dictation will take place, and this year the text for the dictation was created by the writer Māris Bērziņš, while in Riga - in the Palace of Light - it will be dictated by the Latvian National Theater actress Agnese Budovska. World Dictation in the Latvian Language is a private initiative aimed at developing the Latvian language and strengthening its roots in today's multicultural environment. Within nine years, it has grown from a small event organized by language enthusiasts into an international project, in which 2,000 interested people from 29 countries participated last year. Every year, one of the modern Latvian writers creates a text of about 300 words, which is dictated by a famous Latvian actor. The participants of the dictation are not graded, and the dictation can be written either with your name or anonymously, as the goal of the initiative is to give everyone an opportunity to assess their knowledge of Latvian spelling. The best participants of the dictation will be presented with gifts from the cooperation partners of the dictation. Those interested who have written the dictation in person will be able to get acquainted with the error correction of their work at the respective venues, while those who have completed the task online will be able to view the error correction on the website www.raksti.org within a couple of months after the event.
